"My All" is the third track and fifth single from Mariah Carey's sixth studio album, Butterfly.[1] It was released through Columbia Records on April 28, 1998.
It is also the 13th track on her third compilation album, #1 to Infinity. In the album credits, she wrote that it was the first time she “fell in love with love”.[1]
The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 on May 23, 1998, making it Mariah’s 13th #1 hit on the charts.
Background[]
In the "Just Like Honey" chapter of Mariah's memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey" she explains the background of the song.[2]
During her separation from Tommy Mottola, she decided to take a secret trip to Puerto Rico to see Derek Jeter who she had a "secret romance" with. While in Puerto Rico she stayed at the El Conquistador Resort. At the resort, Derek and Mariah shared an intimate moment which involved : one, single, long kiss."
On the ride back to the United States, Mariah constructed the following lyrics of "My All" :

Mariah describes in her memoir that she actually believed she risked her life to see Derek that day in Puerto Rico:

Mariah first played the song to Tommy and Don Ienner, the then-chairman of the Columbia Records Group, in the Range Rover, on their way to a restaurant in upstate New York. According to Carey, Don knew it was a hit while Tommy knew it could never be about him.
