The song was released as the second single from the album on October 23, 2001 and became Mariah's first radio airplay-only release in the United States after 1998 when Billboard magazine gave chart eligibility that wasn't released in a physical format.
Even though no remixes of the song were released, the charity single, "Never Too Far\Hero Medley" combines the first verse of "Never Too Far" with a re-recorded version of the second verse & bridge of Mariah's 1993 song, "Hero."
The charity single, "Never Too Far\Hero Medley" managed to peak at #81 on the Billboard Hot 100, but the album version peaked at #105 on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. The song also charted moderately in the U.K., Australia, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
Due to recovering from her emotional and physical breakdown, Mariah was unable to film a music video for the song and instead a video was created using a scene from the film where Billie Frank sings the song at Madison Square Garden during her first sold-out concert.
